Donation Options
There are plenty of organizations in the DC Metro area that will accept donations of personal items. I'm listing here a variety, and will update and add to this list periodically. If you know of a good option not included here, please do reach out to let me know.
Charitable Choices is also a useful organization that does some of the charity research work for a few metro regions in the U.S., including DC Metro. One useful feature of donating items is that it can help us to let go of things we've been holding on to. Knowing that someone could really use an item we feel attached to but never use, certainly softens the goodbye. The following organizations provide this opportunity to help others.

Inova Thrift and Consignment Shops: located throughout Northern Virginia.
Proceeds benefit Inova's medical programs and services.

Capital Caring Thrift Store and Boutique: Falls Church, VA
An advanced home care and hospice provider, Capital Caring uses the proceeds from its thrift store to support its mission to improve care for all, regardless of their ability to pay.

Northern Virginia Family Service Clock Tower Thrift Shop: Falls Church, VA
Clock Tower thrift shop supports NVFS mission to improve quality of life for local families.

Second Chance 1 Thrift Store: Fairfax, VA
Proceeds benefit Humane Society of Fairfax County.

ACTS Thrift Store: Dumfries, VA
Proceeds benefit ACTS' mission to help residents of the Prince William area achieve self-sufficiency.

The Treasure Hound Shop: Chantilly, VA
Proceeds benefit Friends Of Homeless Animals, and is described as an 'upscale resale' shop.
7.
The Closet of Greater Herndon: Herndon, VA
Proceeds benefit the mission to aid low-income families in the surrounding area.

Goodwill of Greater Washington: located throughout the U.S.
Proceeds benefit Goodwill's focus on job training and employment services.
9.
Salvation Army: located throughout the U.S.
Proceeds fund SA's Adult Rehabilitation Centers.

Green Drop: located throughout the Mid-Atlantic
Partners with national charities, serving as local drop-off facilities and providing pick-up services. Items are sold to local thrift stores and proceeds then benefit these charities: Purple Heart Foundation, American Red Cross, National Federation of the Blind, St. Vincent de Paul.
